Home Energy Audits

Senate Bill 1181, passed by the General Assembly and signed into law in 2008, includes a tax deduction for quailified home energy audits and the recommendations of those audits, beginning with the 2009 tax year.

To qualify for the deduction, the home energy audit must be performed by an energy auditor certified by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. Missouri taxpayers who have had a quailifying audit performed on their home may claim an individual income tax deduction for the cost of the energy audit and the cost of implementing energy-efficiency recommendations contained in the audit. The maximum deduction is $1,000 per year, or $2,000 cumulatively for multiple years.

Auditor Certification

The department has finalized certification requirements and guidelines for energy auditors and is accepting applications from Missouri individuals who want to be qualified to conduct audits under this new program. Certification of home energy auditors was included in the new law to help insure that residents are getting the most up-to-date advice and financially beneficial recommendations on methods to reduce their energy consumption.

Home energy auditors may qualify for Missouri certification in any of the following ways:

  1. Completing a training program leading to certification by either the Building Performance Institute (BPI) or the Residential Energy Network (RESNET). More information about BPI and RESNET training and certification is available by visiting those organizations’ Web sites.
  2. Auditors may also be certified by successful completion of programs other than BPI or RESNET if the department concludes that an alternative program meets the training, written and field exams in energy subjects as required under department guidelines.
  3. Individuals who have previously worked as home energy auditors may be eligible for one year provisional certification.
