A Message from the
Land Reclamation Program Director

The Land Reclamation Program works to assure that mineral companies reclaim their mined areas so the land can be reused. In addition, we work to assure the reclamation of abandoned coal mines.

Abandoned coal mined lands present a number of potential hazards to the public: dangerous piles and embankments, burning coal refuse, high pit walls, underground mine subsidence, open shafts and abandoned mining equipment.

Environmental problems can stem from abandoned mines.  Bare acidic spoils and coal refuse areas pollute water through soil erosion, sedimentation and acid mine drainage.   This, in turn, can contaminate drinking water and damage fish and wildlife.

While we are equally concerned about other types of abandoned mines, there are no public funds available for reclamation, except for coal mines. Otherwise, where possible, the Land Reclamation Program works to alleviate the health and environmental problems resulting from mining Missouri's minerals.

We are here to provide Missourians with efficient services to improve and preserve Missouri's vital natural resources.

Sincerely,
Larry Coen, Director
Land Reclamation Program
