Public Notice of Proposed 2008 303(d) List

Public Comments Accepted Until April 10, 2009

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources published a draft of Missouri’s 303(d) List for review and comment until April 10, 2009. Section 303(d) of the federal Clean Water Act requires each state to identify certain waters that are not meeting water quality standards. Water quality standards protect such beneficial uses of water as whole body contact, such as swimming, maintaining fish and other aquatic life and providing drinking water for people, livestock and wildlife. The 303(d) list helps state and federal agencies keep track of waters that have impairment.

The public may view copies of the proposed 2008 303(d) List on the department’s Web site. If unable to access the information through the Web, individuals may request copies of the lists from the department’s Water Protection Program by calling 800-361-4827 or 573-751-1300.

The department will hold a public meeting to discuss this proposed list on March 24 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Lewis and Clark State Office Building, 1101 Riverside Dr. in Jefferson City.

The department will present a final recommended list to the Missouri Clean Water Commission meeting May 6 in the Lewis and Clark State Office Building, 1101 Riverside Dr. in Jefferson City.  The commission could approve the draft 2008 303(d) List at this meeting.

The department will accept written comments on the proposed list until 5 p.m., April 10, 2009.  The public can submit comments in writing to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Attention John Ford, Water Protection Program, P.O. Box 176, Jefferson City, MO 65102, by e-mail to john.ford @dnr.mo.gov or by fax to 573-522-9920.
