ROLLA, MO, DEC. 26, 2007 -- "Responding to numerous environmental emergencies on short notice, Glen Young has shown a strong commitment to protecting Missouri’s natural resources for current and future citizens,” said colleague Peter Price. Young and Price are geologists with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources’ Division of Geology and Land Survey. Price nominated Young for the James Hadley Williams Public Service Award, an award Young received Dec. 12.

Mimi Garstang, state geologist and director of the Division of Geology and Land Survey, joined with staff from the department, Williams (the award's namesake), and guests to honor Young at the Geology and Land Survey offices in Rolla.

Established in 2003, the award is named for retired director and state geologist James Hadley Williams, who served the citizens for nearly 40 years. Williams' qualities of enthusiasm, dedication, hard work and unselfish devotion to meeting the needs of all Missourians are legendary. Presented on an annual basis, the honor goes to the Division of Geology and Land Survey staff member who best embodies the qualities of a selfless public servant. In nominating Young, Price stated, "Glen has risen through the ranks to become the chief of the subsurface investigations unit. He is an expert in several specialized technical areas including groundwater monitoring, site investigation, surface geophysical techniques and risk-based corrective action,” said Price.

“Glen goes far beyond the call of duty on a daily basis. His leadership and mentoring skills serve the organization well. Glen is a careful planner. He leads and conducts physically demanding field activities including geophysical surveys, drilling and sampling. He is considered the “go-to” person for many unusual site-investigation challenges,” said Price.

In presenting the award, Garstang said, "I am pleased to present this award to Glen.  He demonstrates a tremendous, selfless work ethic and definitely fits the definition of public servant.”

Accepting the award, Young said, "Of all the awards within the department, the James Hadley Williams Award is the one I respect the most. I would like to thank Peter Price for nominating me, but I couldn't do the work that I do without the help of the people I work with." A registered geologist, Young has worked with the department for 13 years.
