JEFFERSON CITY, MO, APRIL 11, 2008 -- Representatives from the Missouri Department of Natural Resources are visiting St. Charles today to take part in Gov. Matt Blunt's scheduled Capital for a Day office hours, part of the governor's ongoing initiative to make state government more accessible.
Capital for a Day office hours will begin with a press conference in the state historic site at 1 p.m. today in the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site, which is located at 200-216 South
Main St., St. Charles.
This will be the first time in more than 180 years that the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site in St. Charles has served as a meeting place for the governor and his cabinet. Missouri's first legislators met in the buildings of the First Missouri State Capitol State Historic Site to undertake the task of reorganizing Missouri's territorial government into a progressive state system. From
June 4,1821, to Oct. 1,1826, heated debates of state's rights and slavery filled the rooms of the temporary Capitol.
First Missouri State Capitol State Historic is part of the award-winning system of state parks and state historic sites that are maintained by the department's Division of State Parks. For more information about this site, call the site at 636-940-3322 or the Department of Natural Resources directly at 800-334-6946 (voice) or 800-379-2419 (Telecommunications Device for the Deaf).
