Broken sewer line releases untreated waste
into Hickory Lick Creek in Warrenton

JEFFERSON CITY, OCT. 20, 2009 – The Missouri Department of Natural Resources is overseeing the cleanup of a sewage release resulting from a broken sewer line in Warrenton.

The department was notified of the release Monday by Warrenton city officials, who reported that an 18-inch sewer line approximately one mile from the city’s wastewater treatment facility on Willow Road had fractured, allowing untreated waste to enter Hickory Lick Creek.

The city has dammed the creek and is pumping wastewater from the creek to the wastewater treatment facility while repairs to the line continue.

Based on samples taken by inspectors from the department’s St. Louis Regional Office, the wastewater did not reach Big Creek, which receives water from Hickory Lick Creek.

The department has contacted the health departments of Warren, Lincoln and St. Charles counties, and the Missouri departments of Conservation, and Health and Senior Services.
